Global Textiles

Vol.1 – From Penang, Malaysia

Our journey to Penang, Malaysia brought us face-to-face with a rich tapestry of culture and craftsmanship.
From Paduak-style patterns rooted in Peranakan heritage, to vibrant Indian-inspired fabrics, and handcrafted textiles featuring traditional embroidery, each piece carries its own story and spirit.

These rare finds — vivid colors, intricate motifs, and time-honored techniques — will be seamlessly woven into IORIYA’s Japanese design philosophy.
We honor not just the materials, but the history and artisanship behind them, transforming them into garments that transcend borders.

Through this fusion of cultures, we aim to create works that embody grace, harmony, and a timeless global narrative.

More stories to come as we continue our textile journey around the world.

One distinctive feature of Tango chirimen is the tiny wrinkles or wave-like patterns known as “shibo” that are created through a unique weaving technique. These shibo textures give the fabric its unique sheen and texture, making it highly valued for its luxurious appearance.

Tango chirimen is commonly used in the creation of traditional Japanese clothing, particularly kimonos and other garments. It is known for its ability to hold vibrant and beautiful dyes, resulting in vivid colors and intricate patterns. As a result, it is often worn on special occasions, important ceremonies, and festivals.
